Paternity Leave Set to Increase -
Government Proposals

The Government has announced plans to introduce a new law, which will give fathers increased paternity rights and additional paternity leave.  The proposal is set to cover parents of babies due on or after the 3rd April 2011.

The proposed new law could see the babies father entitled to take any maternity leave not used by the mother should she wish to or need to return to her own work before their entitled year of maternity leave expires.

It could see fathers will be able to request a maximum of three months off work, paid at the statutory rate and up to three months unpaid leave.  At present, fathers can only claim two weeks paid leave.

The entitlement is set to extend to adopting couples and civil partnerships too.
